How to Write Product Descriptions That Sell

In a physical shop, customers can touch the fabric, check the size and ask questions. Online, your product description has to do that job. Good descriptions answer questions before customers ask them, which leads to more confident purchases, fewer returns, and fewer repeated questions on WhatsApp.

Write for the customer's questions

Start by listing the questions customers ask you on calls and WhatsApp about a product. Common ones include:

  • What is it made of, and how does it feel?
  • What size should I choose?
  • How does it look in real life compared with the photo?
  • How do I wash or care for it?
  • When will it arrive, and can I return or exchange it?

Every answer that appears in your description is one less message to reply to and one less reason for the customer to hesitate.

A simple structure

  1. Opening sentenceWhat the product is and who it is for.
  2. Key benefitsTwo or three short points explaining why it is a good choice.
  3. SpecificationsMaterial, measurements, weight, colour and what is included.
  4. Sizing and fitA size chart or clear guidance on how it fits.
  5. Care and deliveryCare instructions, plus a short note on delivery and exchanges.

Be specific

Vague words like premium, high quality and best do not tell customers anything, because every store uses them. Replace them with facts:

Vague

  • "Premium fabric"
  • "Perfect size"
  • "Long-lasting"
  • "Beautiful colour"

Specific

  • "100% cotton, medium weight, suitable for summer"
  • "4.5 metres, enough for a standard adult suit"
  • "Double-stitched seams"
  • "Deep navy; may look slightly darker indoors"

Make it easy to read on a phone

Most shoppers read descriptions on small screens. Use short paragraphs, bullet points for specifications, and collapsible sections for details like sizing, delivery and returns if your theme supports them. Put the most important information near the top.

Write original descriptions

Copying the supplier's or manufacturer's description means your page says exactly the same as many other websites. Write your own, based on your product and your customers' questions. Original descriptions are more useful to customers and give search engines a reason to show your page.

Use natural keywords

Include the words customers actually search for, such as the product type, material and colour, in the title and first sentence. Write naturally; repeating keywords many times makes the text worse for readers and does not help rankings.

Do not overpromise

Describe the product accurately, including any limitations. If a colour looks slightly different in person, say so. If a fabric wrinkles easily, mention it. Honest descriptions reduce returns and build trust, especially for cash-on-delivery stores where returns are expensive (see our COD guide).

Before and after

Before: "Premium quality kurta. Best fabric. Must buy."

After: "A white cotton kurta for everyday summer wear. Lightweight, breathable fabric with a regular fit. Available in S to XL; see the size chart below. Machine wash cold, iron on medium heat. Delivered in 3–5 working days across Pakistan."

The second version answers the main questions in five short sentences.

A copyable template

  • Opening: [Product] for [who / occasion]. [One standout feature].
  • Benefits: [Benefit 1], [Benefit 2], [Benefit 3].
  • Specifications: Material, measurements, weight, colour, what is included.
  • Size and fit: Size chart or fit guidance.
  • Care: Washing and ironing instructions.
  • Delivery and exchanges: Typical delivery time and a link to your policy.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a product description be?

Long enough to answer the important questions. For simple products this may be a few sentences plus specifications; for technical products it may be longer.

Should every product have a unique description?

Yes, where possible. For very similar products, keep shared details (care, delivery) consistent and write a unique opening and specification list for each.

Where do I add descriptions in Shopify?
