How to Choose a Domain Name for a Business

Your domain name appears on your website, email address, business cards, invoices and social media. Changing it later means updating everything and risking lost visitors and emails, so it is worth choosing carefully the first time. This guide covers the practical rules and the checks to make before you buy.

1. Keep it short and easy to say

Test every candidate by saying it out loud to someone over the phone. If you have to spell it out or explain it, it is too complicated. Short names are also easier to type on a phone keyboard, fit better on printed material, and make shorter email addresses.

There is no strict character limit, but most strong business domains are one to three words. If your full business name is long, consider a shortened form people already use when they talk about you.

2. Avoid hyphens, numbers and unusual spellings

Hyphens are often forgotten when someone types your address from memory. Numbers create confusion: is it 4 or four? Creative spellings cause the biggest problem of all. If your business name can be spelled in two ways, customers will try both.

Use one spelling everywhere. Choose one spelling and use it for your domain, email address, social profiles and printed material. An email address with a different spelling from your website looks careless and can send customer emails to the wrong place.

3. Choose the right extension

.com

  • Most recognised worldwide
  • Good for international customers
  • Popular names are often taken

.pk / .com.pk

  • Signals a Pakistan-based business
  • Builds trust with local customers
  • Managed by PKNIC through registrars

Newer extensions such as .store or .shop can work, especially when the .com is taken, but some people still assume every website ends in .com and may type the wrong address. If your preferred .com is available, consider registering both the .com and your local extension, then redirecting one to the other so both lead to the same website.

4. Checks before you buy

  • Search the name on Google to see whether another business already uses it, especially in your industry
  • Check that matching usernames are available on the social platforms you use
  • Make sure the name does not use another company's trademark; this can lead to losing the domain
  • Read the name as one word without spaces to check it does not form an unintended word
  • Check that it still makes sense if your business adds new products or services

5. Look beyond the first-year price

Many registrars offer a low price for the first year and a much higher renewal price afterwards. Always check the renewal cost before buying, and compare total cost over several years rather than the promotional price. Turn on auto-renewal and keep the payment method up to date. Losing a domain because a renewal was missed is one of the most common and avoidable website problems, and an expired domain can be registered by someone else.

6. Ownership and security

If a developer, agency or friend registers your domain, make sure the registrar account is in your name and you have the login details. You should always be able to move your domain or website without needing anyone's permission.

After registering:

  1. Turn on two-step verificationon your registrar account, so a stolen password is not enough to take control of the domain.
  2. Keep the registrar lock enabledto help prevent unauthorised transfers to another registrar.
  3. Set up business email on the domainsuch as info@yourbusiness.com, and add SPF, DKIM and DMARC records so your emails are trusted.
  4. Connect it to your websiteby updating DNS records, or by setting it as the primary domain in a platform like Shopify.

Example

A tailoring business called "Ahmed Custom Tailors" in Lahore might consider ahmedtailors.pk or ahmedcustomtailors.com. The first is shorter and clearly local; the second is longer but exactly matches the business name. Either works. What matters most is that the owner then uses the same domain for email, for example info@ahmedtailors.pk, rather than a free email address with a different spelling, and lists it consistently on social media and printed material.

Frequently asked questions

Does the domain name affect Google rankings?

Keywords in a domain have little direct effect today. A memorable brand name usually serves you better than a long keyword-stuffed domain.

Can I connect a domain bought elsewhere to Shopify?

Yes. You can connect a third-party domain to Shopify by updating its DNS records, or transfer it to Shopify.

What if my preferred name is taken?

Try adding your city or a simple descriptive word, or choose a different extension. Avoid buying a near-copy of another business's domain.

Should I buy common misspellings of my domain?

For most small businesses this is not necessary. It can make sense if your name is often misspelled and the extra domains are inexpensive; redirect them to your main domain.
